LET'S DEBATE: PEACE.101
DEBATE OUTLINE
Conflict does not exist in advanced civilisations. Grown-Up Intelligent Societies never dream of resorting to conflict to settle disputes. Conflict causes disharmony, often with devastating and lasting effects. Instead, intelligent debate, tuned to conflict resolution guidelines, is the answer. The goals are fairness and - above all - truth, honesty and justice.
"Peace does not mean an absence of conflicts. Peace is achieved by dialogue, knowledge and humanity."

DEBATE DESCRIPTION
The subject of peace in the world could hardly be more important to any of us at this time!
This debate - the third in a series - will begin to explore the wider issues of how we can live together – intelligently - in peace. It’s about identifying what is missing in the world – both on the world stage and even in our very high streets – causing rifts to occur and clearly being so hard to mend.
In recent times we have seen an explosion in conflicts around the world. The two latest being the rift between Ukraine and Russia and more recently between Israel and Palestine. The worrying aspect of both these latest conflicts is that the major nation players in the world do not see it as appropriate to call a cease to hostilities. This means one or two factors are present. Politicians are incapable of dealing with these high-octane issues - and/or, they’ve a particular interest in the conflicts continuing.
But these conflicts are not just limited to the world stage as suggested. We see them in our own communities, where people – particularly over the last three or more years – have been pitched against one another depending on their beliefs in one ideology or another. Again, it appears here that politicians are incapable of dealing with these destabilising issues - and/or, they’ve a particular interest in the conflicts continuing.
The way forward is surely a return to fundamental principles of how intelligent people work through their differences. We could begin by looking at the Debate Charter which guides these very debates. It’s this very guide which might provide the very clues all of us are now looking for.
There is no better time than now for a debate on all these issues to commence. Furthermore, a debate on peace in the world needs to involve the general public, the very people who are being potentially - and in some cases, definitely - harmed in some way by all these conflicts.
So the purpose of this debate is to gain and share as many different insights and viewpoints as is possible. These very insights and viewpoints will come from those returning to the basics – people with a passion for peace and a perspective on how it can be achieved. It’s about sharing, agreeing and then putting into practice what we believe is an intelligent way forward. It’s about people like you and us - the people who live as part of, and care deeply about, peace among all people for the sake of our own lives and those of our children.
Finally, one may think it's a strange thing to occur - the community coming together to debate something which is usually only in the domain of government. From many people's perspectives, however, the size of this peace problem - which potentially now requires a more philosophical approach to solving the issues - is actually seen as too large a task for just 650 representative SMPs in Westminster to deal with alone.
All debates adhere to The Debate Charter.
The Debate Charter is otherwise referred to as Charter House Rules.
It is a code which describes the guiding principles for our exchanges.
